If only it was so easy! But actually, it's not so hard to take action on those items I listed above. Here's the scoop on how to implement each step.

Apply Windows Updates

If you run Windows and you use the Internet, you simply MUST stay up to date with the system patches that come out in response to the privacy and security exploits that are discovered every week. Failure to do so is an open invitation to hackers and crackers to invade your privacy and enslave your computer in a spam spewing network. To get the latest fixes and configure your system for automatic updates, open Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then Windows Update.

Clean out Viruses and Malware

Are you running a good anti-virus program, with automatic updates? Have you scanned your system for spyware, adware and other unwanted pests? If not, see my article "Spy, Counter-Spy" at AskBobRankin.com for details on how to protect yourself from those risks. Viruses and malware can slow down your system a LOT, because they use your resources to generate popup ads, send spam, and often interfere with the operation of good programs.

Remove Unnecessary Software

You may have a bunch of software packages on your hard drive that are no longer needed, or they were gratuitously installed when you downloaded some other package. Toolbars, file-sharing programs, free email enhancers, online shopping "companions" and download managers are notorious for this practice. These uninvited guests can put a big drag on your startup time, cause web pages to load slowly, and generally bog down your computer. Go to Control Panel, then Add/Remove Software to see what packages are installed. Remove the ones you know you don't need, and do a web search to learn about the ones you're not sure about.

Scrub That Hard Disk

Both Windows and application programs tend to leave temporary files lying around on your hard drive, taking up space needlessly. A hard drive that is close to being full can cause Windows to act strangely, and will slow down or interfere with efficient disk access and virtual memory operations. And if you surf the web a lot, your temporary internet files folder can become quite large, causing Internet Explorer to slow down or malfunction. Cleaning up unneeded files, scanning for disk errors and defragmenting the hard drive can help to restore some zip to your system. First, open My Computer, right-click on the C: Drive icon, select Properties, then click on Disk Cleanup. (Optional: Select the More Options tab to find and remove even more unwanted files.) To run a defrag, open My Computer, right-click on the C: Drive icon, select Properties, then Tools. Click the Check Now button to scan your disk for errors. When the scan is complete, click the Defragment Now button to run the defrag, which reorganizes your hard disk so Windows can find and access files more efficiently. (It's highly recommended that you close all running programs and disable your screen saver before running a defrag. Otherwise, updates to your files may trigger defrag to restart endlessly.)

Okay, Now Take a Breath...

We're more than half-way done with the process of cleaning the junk out of your computer. The rest of the steps may seem a little more geeky, and you can skip any or all of them if you don't feel comfortable digging a little deeper into the workings of the Windows operating system. But there is definitely bang for the buck here. Some of peskiest Windows performance problems can be solved by giving attention to these areas.

Slim Your Startup Selections

There are certain programs that Windows will start every time you boot up your system, and during the startup phase, they're all jockeying for a slice of your CPU. Extra or unwanted items in the startup list will defintely increase your startup time, perhaps by several minutes. To manage the list of startup programs, click on Start / Run, then type MSCONFIG. Press Enter, then select the Startup tab. If you see items in the list you know you don't need to run at startup time, UNcheck the box(es) next to them and press Apply. Some common examples are things related to AOL, RealPlayer, Napster, instant messengers, and video managers. If you're not sure about an item, no big deal. You can turn it off, restart your PC, and see if everything seems to work. If not, you can always go back and re-enable an item in the Startup list. This helpful list may help you decide what to keep or drop.

Clean Your Registry

The REGCLEAN utility from Microsoft cleans your system registry of unnecessary entries that are created when you install or remove programs on your computer. Sometimes an "orphaned" registry entry can confuse Windows during startup and cause a delay. And in general, slimming down your registry will make Windows run faster. You can download REGCLEAN here. Note: This program is no longer officially supported by Microsoft, but many users report that it works fine on Windows XP systems. You can also try RegSeeker which is a highly rated registry cleaner.

RAM and Virtual Memory Settings

When you run out of physical (RAM) memory, Windows will use a check of your hard disk to create virtual memory. This is a nice feature, because it allows application programs to access huge amounts of memory. The only problem with virtual memory is that it's a lot slower than real RAM. So installing extra RAM on the system board is a good idea because it's pretty cheap and easy to pop in. Find out how much your system will accommodate and install the maximum amount. Extra RAM will probably do more to boost your overall system performance than anything else! But getting back to Virtual Memory, it's wise to let Windows manage the amount, unless you are a Wizard, with a capital W. Go to Control Panel / System / Advanced, then press the Settings button under Performance. Click Advanced again, then press the Change button under Virtual Memory. If System managed size is selected, you're all set. If you want to fiddle with the Custom Size options, be my guest!

Turn Off Extraneous System Services

We're heading into uber-geek territory here, so be forewarned. Windows doesn't know exactly how you're going to use your computer, so it starts a whole bunch of system services that manage network connections, database access, error reporting, remote access and other nerdy-sounding things. You may not need all these services, and disabling some of them can reduce your startup time and system overhead. But choosing which ones to nuke is a bit daunting, unless you are an expert on Windows operating system internals. Here's my advice... disable only the ones that you're sure about. If you encounter a problem, you can always go back and turn a service back on.

Some Notes On Garment Seams

Remember the plain seam which is sewn right side to right side. This means that the wrong sides are on the outside and the seam is thus sewn on the wrong side; So when you are finished sewing, the seam with its seam lips on both sides is on the inside or wrong side and this is what you want. You want the seam lips on the inside so that all that is seen on the outside is a line of stitching.

For the flat fell or fell seam, you begin by sewing your first seam on the inside or wrong side of the fabric. Thus fabrics are right side to right side. This seam should be approximately 3/8 inch and then you snip off one of the seam lips to within 1.8 inch of the stitching line. Then you turn the larger lip in under the smaller one. You aim to enclose the smaller lip, Note that there are three layers. You can ask if you just want to sew the two upper layers together i.e. the two seam lips or do you want to sew the seam lips down to the actual fabric.

This is an interesting move i.e. just to sew the two lips together through hand stitching and this is an elegant finish. The lips will hold together; and the seam will have a turned in look. This is the fell or flat fell seam and this seam is now usually done by stitching the three layers together through a top-stitch. In this way the flat fell is done by holding down the seam lips to the fabric itself; the seam lips having been enclosed in each other.

Then for the French seam, the difference is that you start off at the right side of the garment. Thus the sides are placed wrong side to wrong side and the seam is sewn. You can then see the stitching line on the wrong side. The seam lips are then shortened to approximately one eighth of an inch. The garment is then turned around so that you are working on the right side. The aim is now to enclose the inside seam lips. Sew then at least inch from the fold to enclose the inside lips. This stitching line should not be visible on the outside. What is done here is not a seam at all. It is a stitching line done to enclose the inside lips and to neaten the seam. French seams are an elegant finish for fine and lightweight material such as chiffons and light fine silks.

What Constitutes Revenue?

Generally, rental income is defined as any revenue you receive from the occupancy or use of residential property. Rent, obviously, is included in that revenue. Many owners are surprised to learn revenue also includes rent advancements, expenses paid by a tenant and any security deposits not returned to the tenant. In fact, revenue can also include amounts paid to cancel a lease, even if you had to sue the defendant to get it.

Yeah, Yeah, But What Can I Deduct?

Tax deductions associated with rental properties are strikingly similar to those found in any business. Technically, you can deduct any expense reasonably necessary to manage, conserve or maintain the property. Obvious deductions include mortgage payments, cleaning expenses, insurance premiums, service payments such as landscape maintenance, repairs, maintenance, etc. Overlooked rental property deductions include:

1. Expenses incurred in finding tenants,

2. Commissions paid to third parties that arrange for tenants,

3. Paying your accountant and/or lawyer,

4. Mileage for driving to and from the property [I said, No more parties!]

5. Depreciation of the property,

6. Depreciation of items in the property such as washing machines, furniture, etc.

Imaginary Rent Deduction

A few creative property owners have suggested that they should be able to deduct their customary and standard monthly rent if the property is empty. The argument goes, If the property is empty, I am not making revenue and should be able to deduct the $1,500 that I am missing out on. At first glance, this almost makes sense. Sadly, it doesnt fly from the perspective of the IRS. Since you are not receiving revenues, your total revenues for the year will be reduced by the loss rent. You cant double dip by deducting the $1,500 from the already reduced yearly revenues. The only things you can deduct are the expenses you incur during this period, and only for so long as you are actively trying to rent the place.

rental properties are a great investment. Even more so if you stay on top of your taxes.

Our solar system and universe are full of beauty. Unfortunately, many of these beautiful celestial objects are not visible to the naked eye. This is where the magnificent telescope comes into play, allowing us to view objects like the planets of our solar system and beyond.

Telescopes are used for many purposes. One for scientists usually studying physics or astronomy. And on a more personal level people who just have a hobby of stargazing. Telescopes come with magnifiers, that allow us to see things magnified with a clear view. These things if not magnified would just look like any other object in the sky to our naked eyes.

So what makes a telescope work? The two lens' that are installed into the telescope. Each lens has a specific function. The objective lens or primary mirror, collects the light radiated by the celestial object being viewed and brings it down to a focus point. The eyepiece lens picks up the sharp light from the focus point and disperses it to the eyes retina to view.

The diameter of a lens in the telescope determines how much light will be collected, and is termed the aperture. So the larger the lense the more light can be gathered. However image enlargement is dependent on the blending of the lens'. The eyepiece is the part of the telescope that does the magnification.

The prices of telescopes vary greatly. You can also buy different accessories to your telescope to increase the quality of the image seen. No matter which type of telescope you buy the objective is the same, and that is to view objects that are very, very far away. As with the rest of technological advancements, telescopes are only going to continue to evolve into becoming more and more powerful. Allowing us to see objects in space farther and farther away. This is truly exciting news we have been able to find other hospitable planets on solar systems millions of light years away. Only one can imagine what these great inventions of man will let us see in the future.

Are You Getting the Most From Your iPod musicDownloads?

Once the musichas been downloaded all that is required is to connect the iPod to the computer using the USB cable or the FireWire connection and synchronize your iPod with the computer. Most of the docking station and cradles that hold the iPod during this process already have batteries or are charging your iPod so you dont need to worry about running your play time down while you are synching your iPod. Some iPods, such as the Shuffle, allow for random selections of songs to give a unique play list every time, and even allows the listener to hear new musicwhile still staying within a particular genre or musicstyle.

Adwords Analyzer review

1. Type in a keyword or phrase that you are interested in researching.

2. Press a button.

Adwords Analyzer goes and finds related keywords and analyzes them in terms of how many people search using those keywords, how much competition there is for these keywords at Google.

Before I go on to the main part of this software, I would just like to point out that this software uses the Overture keyword tool to make its list of words and find the number of monthly searches. Overture in my opinion is heavily flawed in a few ways. Keyword counts can be vastly over-estimated in some cases (possibly due to webmasters using Overture for their own research) and keyword plurals and mispellings are lumped together. For Overture, these inflated values allow them to increase the price for bids. Good for Overture. For any software using the Overture figures, you can get a very wrong idea of what real people search for and how often. That being said, I don't think it affects this software too much.

Common sense will usually tell you when a keyword is good. This software queries Google to find out how many adwords campaigns are being run on each of the keywords. It does the same at Overture. Google displays 8 ads per page. If Adwords Analyzer tells you that there are less than 8 ads for a particular keyword, you know you can bid on that word for the minimum 5 cents and still be on the front page of Google. Neat huh? Similarly you can use the figures for Overture to see how much competition there is for each word. I don't use Overture myself so have not really explored this part of Adwords Analyzer. Now, here is my second big concern about Adwords Analyzer. This software queries Google search engine for its results. Google has clearly pointed out on different occasions that automatic query tools are frowned upon. Could this software get you into trouble with Google? Maybe. I am certainly not oing to be more than one research per day, possibly even less than that.

Adwords Analyzer update introduced a time delay when querying the search engines. This now makes it much more respectful to Google than it previously was, and so may be much safer to use than previous version. Nice features of Adwords Analyzer. You can decide which Google Datacentre to query for number of Adwords campaigns. I live in Tenerife, Spain, and if I carry out a query here, I may only get 2 - 3 campaigns being run on Google. However, those of you querying in USA may find that the same keyword has 50 campaigns. My target audience is actually USA. Adwords Analyzer allows me to change the default Google "query station" from www.google.com (with its localization filters set to Europe/Spain) to www-sj.google.com (which supposedly does not filter the results for locality). This then shows me pretty much what you American webmasters see, and I can be confident the numbers of Adwords Campaigns are right.

Another great feature is that you can import your keyword list from a text file. This is great because you can carry out your research on Wordtracker or Nichefinder first. Create a smaller list of keywords that you are interested in and then run them through Adwords Analyzer. This may help to prevent over-use of Google querying words you are not really interested in.

To sum up, I think this tool is a huge time-saver. However, I would not recommend it to any of my own clients because of the problems Google would have with this software. It is a great idea, but in my opinion it is fatally flawed. If I find out anything else from Google regarding this tool, I will add it to my review. Read more about Adwords Analyzer.

History of the Camera

Early cameras of the 16th and 17th century were able to project images onto paper or glass but the study of capturing, processing and printing the images took many more years. Up until the 17th century, scientists believed that light was composed basically of the white that is perceived by the human eye. It took the research done by famous physicist Isaac Newton to discover that light is actually composed of a spectrum of colors. While he made a big contribution to the study of optics (that is at the core of camera advances) with this discovery, Newton did not actually have anything to do with camera development per se.

The early camera that first became a phenomenon was a little more than a pinhole camera and can be traced back to 1558. It was called the Camera Obscura. The Camera Obscura was seen as a drawing tool for a clearer and realistic portrayal of objects. It was in the early 19th century that an invention named the Camera Lucida was introduced by Cambridge scientist William Hyde Wollaston that consisted of an optical device that could help an artist view a distant scene or person or object on a paper surface that he or she was using to draw. In other words the artist gets to view a superimposed image of a subject on paper and this image could be effectively used to attempt to draw, trace or paint it. Both the Camera Obscura and the Camera Lucida provided an image that was temporary, which could not be lastingly captured on to paper for later reference.

Studies however continued well into the 1800s on how to actually capture the image onto material. It was during this time, around 1822 that French researcher Joseph Nicephore Niepce, created the first photograph by using paper that was coated with a chemical. The image would not stay permanently on the paper and would disappear after a short while. Even so, despite the short-lived nature of the image, the concept of photography was born with this experiment and paved the way for further study and development in this field.

Capturing images to retain them longer and permanently became the next big quest for researchers. Another Frenchman Louis-Jacques-Mand Daguerre partnered with Joseph Nicphore Nipce in 1829, to develop the process of creating permanent photographs. Joseph Nipce died in 1833 but Daguerre continued with the work and succeeded in 1837 after many long years of experimentation. The process of capturing photographic images that would not fade away, introduced by Daguerre came to be known as the daguerreotype.

The word photography was coined by scientist Sir John F.W. Herschel in 1839 and it is actually is derived from two Greek words photos meaning light and graphein meaning draw.

A slightly more advanced version of the daguerreotype called the Calotype process that makes multiple copies possible using the negative and positive method became available very soon after. In fact, it was during the 1840s that the use of photographic images in advertisements first started and cameras made their mark on the power of visual communication. It was not much later, in the 1850s that photographers first started experimenting with underwater photography of seascapes.

Up until 1850, the process of capturing images was cumbersome requiring upto half an hour of light exposure. The discovery made in 1851 by Frederick Scott Archer was a blessing since the new method termed the Collodion process called for just 2-3 seconds of light exposure to capture an image.

Prior to 1871, photographers went through a development process where they had to coat the plate with wet chemical each and every time and process the image immediately. With the invention the gelatin dry plate silver bromide process by Richard Leach Maddox, negatives did not have to be developed immediately. This was an important discovery since up until then the captured image had to be processed instantly.

Kodak created in 1888 by George Eastman has been a modern day pioneer of sorts in cameras and photography for the masses. George Eastman and the scientists who worked with him at Kodak developed the photographic film in 1889 and made it available in rolls for the mass use of consumers. An important milestone in our entertainment and communication history was the development of transparent roll film by Eastman. This development led to another key invention the motion picture camera by Thomas Edisons in 1891.

During the 20th century the pace of technology development in cameras and photography continued at an accelerated pace much like many other key technology developments. While several key inventions like car, telephone and the gramophone record happened in the later half of the 19th century, it is the last 100 years that saw major developmental work in many areas of communications technology and as well as in other fields TV, aircrafts, PCs, digital technology, digital cameras, mobile phones, fax machines and the internet, to name a few.

In the case of the camera, the developments simplified the whole process of photography, making it accessible to one and all at affordable prices and the camera industry denizens of our times made it into a mass phenomenon. The first mass use camera became available at the turn of the 20th century and can be traced back to the year 1900. There are hundreds of models of cameras available today both for the amateur as well as the professional and the camera is an important part of any familys repertoire of must have gadgets.

1913: 35 mm still-camera created

1927: The flash bulb introduced by General Electric Co. (The concept of camera flash existed much before but was based on the use of a flash light powder that was invented by German researchers)

1935- 1941: Kodak starts marketing Kodachrome film and subsequently launches Kodacolor negative film. Canon released the Hansa Canon in 1936, the first 35mm focal-plane shutter camera.

1948: The concept of the Polaroid camera is introduced in the market. American scientist Edwin Land developed the process for instant photography. Later Polaroid Corporation developed the instant color film around 1963.

1957: Frenchman Jaques Yves Cousteau invented the first waterproof 35mm camera for underwater photography named the Calypso Phot. The actual camera was developed by the Belgian airplane technical designer Jean de Wouters based on the blueprint and suggestions given to him by Cousteau.

1972: The electronic camera that does not require film was created and patented by Texas Instruments. This is however not the same as a digital camera though you dont require film in digital cameras as well. The launch of the digital camera is still many years away.

1975: Kodaks experiments with digital imaging kicked off around the mid seventies but it will take another 20 years before a digital camera for the home consumer market is launched.

1978 1980: Asian players like Konica and Sony begin to make their mark. The point and shoot automatic focus camera is launched by Konica while Sony starts talking about the camcorder and demonstrates a prototype.

1981: Sony launches a commercially available electronic still camera. Similar to the 1972 invention by Texas Instruments, the Sony electronic camera came with a mini disc on which images were recorded and stored. The recorded images could be later printed or viewed on a monitor using a reader device.

1985: Digital processing technology makes its entry. Digital imaging and processing is introduced by Pixar.

1986: The camera industry becomes even more consumer focused and taps the fun and travel connotations behind camera usage, with the launch of the concept of the disposable single use cameras. Fuji is credited with the development of this concept.

Also in 1986 - 1987, Kodak started taking giant strides in digital development. Digital means, the photographic image is divided into tiny units of dots or squares known as pixels. Pixels are the programmable units of an image that can be processed by computers. Each image could be made up of millions of pixels. The use of pixels in digital technology allows storing large volumes of pixels to deliver high definition print quality.

1990: Kodak introduces Photo CDs. It is a system of storing photographic images on CD and then viewing them on a computer. With this development the user-friendly approach of the camera industry began to take concrete shape.

1991: Kodak introduces a digital camera targeted at professionals and journalists. Kodak is credited with the invention of a pixel based camera technology known to us as the digital camera. Digital cameras dont use film similar to their predecessor electronic cameras but the storage method is entirely different and the final photograph is of much higher resolution. In a digital camera photos are recorded and stored in digital form. This digital data can be transferred to a computer and processed for printing. Kodak and Canon are well known digital camera manufacturers and there are also several other key brands as well.

1994: The Apple QuickTake camera, a home use digital camera is launched. This is followed by the launch of a clutch of home use digital cameras by Casio, Kodak and others in quick succession during 1995 -96.

Beauty Sleep - Is It A Dream?

As women we know that a lack of sleep leaves us irritable; however most of us are unaware of the damage it may be doing to our skin? Besides being an essential component of a healthy lifestyle, getting 8 hours of sleep per night helps improve the texture and the luminosity of our skin. During the night the skin is restored from the harmful effects of daily stress. When we do not get the required sleep our skin suffers. This is especially noticeable in the fragile skin under the eyes. The under eye area is almost fifty percent thinner than the skin on the face. Sleepless nights leaves behind fine lines, dark circles or puffy bags. Cosmetic treatments can soften the effects of sleep deprivation but preventive medicine is the best cure. Eye treatments are limited in their ability and cannot reverse the stress that a lack of sleep will do to the skin.

Sleep experts say that we need 8 hours of sleep per night. However, the latest research shows that women average 6 hours and forty minutes of sleep during the week and 7 hours on the weekend. Besides the extra work that women have to contend with (helping with homework, laundry, cooking, etc.) and the many concerns that keep them from sleep, women are also be kept awake by - small children who wake during the night, teenagers coming home late, aging parents who get up during the night.

What can we do to sleep more peacefully and longer? Here are some hints:

1.Eliminate noise from your bedroom. Bedroom sounds should be low and consistent. Try earplugs.
2.Keep your room dark by using dark fabric on your windows. If that is not possible, try eyeshades.
3.The temperature of the room should be cool.
4.A relaxing bath before you go to bed will induce sleep.
5.Set a schedule to arise, no matter what time you went to bed the night before.
6.Turn your clock so you can't see the time if you wake up in the middle of the night.
7.Keep TV's and computers out of the bedroom, make it a place just for sleep and sex.
8.Get a queen-size mattress if you don't sleep alone. We need room to move.
9.Avoid alcohol before sleeping. While alcohol may help us fall asleep, it will also wake us in the middle of the night.
10.Avoid nicotine before going to bed because it is a stimulant.
11.Don' go to bed hungry or overly full. Have a snack early in the night.
12.Watch your coffee intake. Caffeine from coffee, tea, cola and chocolate can affect you for up to twelve hours.
13. If you fret during the night or if you think of something that you must do the next day, write it down so you can deal with it in the morning.
14.Try natural-fill pillows such as down or feather because they have the most adjustability. If you suffer from back pain put a pillow between your knees for a more comfortable sleep.

Trouble Shooting Air Conditioners

Before you call a air conditioning service repair man to check your air conditioner thats not cooling you may want to check some of these possible causes. First and most obvious is to be sure your system air filter is not restricted. In many cases this will cause your evaporator or indoor coil to freeze up. If the system has a fan v-belt make sure it is not cracked broke or slipping. If the evaporator coil is froze up you may notice condensate leaking in and around the furnace, air handler or window type A/C unit. Another more apparent sign would be actually seeing ice build up on the coil or refrigeration lines connecting the evaporator and condenser.

Another cause for your system freezing up could be closed or blocked supply registers. In some cases people will close registers to unoccupied areas of their home for energy savings but closing to many can cause more problems than its worth. System freeze ups can also be related to a lose of refrigerant with in your air conditioner. If your system is low on refrigerant you will have to have a qualified air conditioning repair technician locate and repair the leak as well as properly recharge the system. Any time your air conditioner system is froze up you should place the thermostats fan switch to the on position and the cool system switch to off for a long enough time to allow the coils to completely thaw. After checking some or all of the potential problems you can try to run the air conditioner again. If you have air blowing out of your supply registers but its not cool you will want to check the condenser or out door unit to be sure it is running. If you do not hear anything running check the breaker or disconnect switch at the condenser. Their may also be bad fuses in the disconnect box. Tripped breakers or blow fused are typically caused by problems that need to be addressed by a technician . It is possible that a power surge or electrical storm could also cause a breaker to trip and once you reset it the system will be fine. Another common cause for the condenser not functioning is a broken or shorted low voltage wire. Mice and other rodents will tend to chew though these wires. The low voltage wire is typically a small two conductor wire that runs along side the refrigerant lines. If the condenser is running but not cooling you may want to clean it. This can be done by turning off power to it, then wet it down with a garden hose. Apply a air conditioning coil cleaning solvent to the coil surface. Convenient aerosol spray cans or mixable powder form can be purchased online at HVAC Maintenance & Supplies.

(www.mainsupplies.com) Allow the coil to soak for 3-5 minutes then flush out with a garden hose. Be sure the water pressure is not so high that it damages the coil fins. A coil fin tool, also available online at HVAC Maintenance & Supplies can be used to straighten the fins. Repeat this process until the water starts to flush out relatively clear. Safety glasses and rubber gloves should be worn when using coil cleaning chemicals. If your air conditioner is a portable window type you can carefully remove the units outer casing, apply coil cleaner to both evaporator and condenser coils then flush with water. Most dirt will build up on the inside of the condenser coil that can not be seen with out removing the units outer casing. These tips may not resolve all your air conditioning problems but I can tell you that as a service technician myself these are some of the most common problems I have encountered.
